"Queenslander" a style of
dwelling built in Queensland favoured by early settlers that helps make the inside of the house
cooler. The weather in Queensland can be very humid along the coastal regions.
The house was positioned on high
stumps, and generally it had a surrounding veranda. Under the house was used for many things.
In this case there was an air raid shelter, which the owner felt was necessary to build. This heavy
work contributed to his early death from a heart attack. Darwin was bombed during the Second
World War by the Japanese so the threat of invasion at that time was real.
