The Gold Coast in Queensland probably
still the most popular area of Queensland's east coast. As you go further north we have
Caloundra, Noosa, Cairns and many places in between. The gold coast was the first area to be
really developed as holiday resort style accommodation especially Surfer's Paradise. At the
time when this development was taking place there was a lot of opposition by the locals and the
usual complaints about spoiling the environment. Needless to say the developers won the day.
It is hard for people to visualize the area before the high rise accommodation. The beaches
were very wild and rugged with huge, beautiful sand dunes right down to the surf. The sand was
very fine and almost white. The beaches were very popular with families - generally from
Brisbane - going down the coast nearly every weak-end, with their home made sandwiches, and
cakes. People brought their own large bottles of soft drink and there would be much argument
about whether Johnnie got more drink than Sarah and other such serious matters.
Ah those were the days when life was so simple and uncomplicated.
