Don't be fooled by the unusual and perhaps rather ordinary appearance of this national park, it is
absolutely fascinating and far from ordinary. Situated in the north-west of Victoria and very
close to the townships of Dimboola and Horsham. Both these townships are situated in one of
the main wheat growing areas in Victoria, known as the Wimmera. The Little Desert National
Park has astounding displays in spring of wildflowers and more than 600 plant species including 40
ground orchids. It has many native species of birds but the most important in this area is the
malleefowl and this park is a great spot for study by naturalists of the native flora known as
mallee scrub.
This area is in the Wimmera region of Victoria which is sometimes referred to the as the Granery of
the State, with mile upon mile of golden wheat stretching as far as the eye can see. Quite an
amazing sight really.
As you would imagine because of the very flat terrain it is very easy to negotiate and you can
really take a good look at everything without having to climb and clamber over rocks, battle your
way through rain forest etc. It is a good idea to wear heavy quality boots because you
may come across snakes. Bushwalkers in Australia should always be aware that we have some of
the most poisonous snakes in the world and wearing proper clothes and boots is an absolute safety
precaution. Leave the snakes alone and they will not bother you but will slither away to
safety. It is very unlikely you will come across any but it is better to be aware that they
could be around.
