Azaleas - one of the most popular of
the spring flowering shrubs. The plants range from dwarf to large. There are several
species and hundreds of hybrids and named varieties in single and double flowers and a huge
selection of colours.

Azaleas are very hardy. The evergreens will grow just about anywhere except in the tropical regions.
The deciduous types prefer cooler regions and both types require an acid soil. They prefer a
well drained sheltered position as the shallow root system needs to be kept cool and moist.
They are very popular in Victoria especially in the very fertile Dandenong Ranges.
They can be used as a cut flower provided you scrape or slit the stems and handle them as little as
possible. Even so they are not long lasting and this is a pity as they are so attractive.
